The Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) is a mandatory energy assessment requirement for large undertakings and their corporate groups in the UK.

If, on the 31 December 2014, your company had 250 or more employees OR an annual turnover greater than £38.9m and an annual balance sheet of £33.5m, then you are required to comply. Qualification for ESOS will be through the structure of your corporate group. If there is one enterprise undertaking within the group, then the whole group will qualify. This means that SMEs that are part of corporate groups with one or more enterprise undertaking will be affected by ESOS. Organisations may not need to undertake the Assessment if they are fully covered by ISO 50001, this will still need to be signed off by a Lead Energy Assessor.

CRC The CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme is a mandatory carbon emissions reporting and pricing scheme to cover large public and private sector organisations in the UK (excluding state funded schools in England), that use more than 6,000MWh per year of electricity and have at least one half-hourly meter settled on the half-hourly electricity market.

The scheme is divided into a number of phases, with each phase lasting five years. Currently, the scheme is in its second phase running from April 2014 to March 2019. The UK government announced in 2016 that the CRC energy efficiency scheme will be abolished following the 2018-19 compliance year.
