The pre-treatment requirements and Landfill Diversion

Greenzone continually investigates the alternatives to waste disposal to landfill as well as pre-treatment requirements and options.

We maximise our customers recycling opportunities through the provision of innovative services whilst economically disposing of the remainder as general waste. For most of our customers this simply means we supply equipment and containers to enable you to separate recyclable materials from general waste and then we supply separate uplifts for each material you have collated to ensure their diversion from costly landfill.

The pre-treatment requirements in conjunction with the new Landfill Regulations means that no general waste can be sent to landfill until its producer has certified that it has been part of a pre-treatment process. In time this is intended to reduce the volume of waste sent to landfill as more and more businesses segregate recyclable materials and divert them from landfill.

Every business that is a producer of waste should look to save cost by introducing a pre-treatment element to their waste management activity in the form of recycling by either:

  • Introducing “source segregation” to collect some recyclable materials. This could be something as simple as cardboard, office paper or glass which can then be collected at convenient intervals. This method of pre-treatment compliance is extremely cost efficient!

or

  • Leaving the recycling to a contractor like Greenzone. If the waste produced is unsuitable for source segregation, or where there is limited space to separate out recyclable parts or you do not wish to participate in source segregation, Greenzone will uplift the general waste and take it to a sorting facility where a proportion of the waste is removed for recycling prior to final disposal at landfill. This method of pre-treatment compliance relies on double handling of waste which is significantly more costly than source segregation!

Pre-treatment compliance requires that the proportion of waste recycled should be significant and consistent. This is where Greenzone can help by offering advice and help on the recycling opportunities available to you, as well as providing you with suitable services for the provision of recycling and waste management to your business.
